At SpecialEyes, we know how rewarding it is to create happy, loyal, contact-lens patients—especially when those patients require extended-range parameters and can’t wear just any in-office lens design. So, what happens when that extended-range parameter lens your patient loves gets discontinued? You’ve already spent a lot of time and effort making your patient happy, and now you have to start all over again. Not only is a foiled solution frustrating, but you may also be left wondering how long it will take to find a replacement option to keep this patient happy. We understand how exasperating this process can be. That’s why we have spent 10 years helping practitioners refit their patients with confidence in a custom soft lens design that is here to stay. Want proof? Check out the case study below!
Case Study
DM, a female with high myopia and astigmatism, presented for her annual contact-lens exam. In the past, she had been successfully wearing CooperVision’s Frequency 55 Toric XR. Upon learning that her favorite lenses were going to be discontinued, the patient immediately expressed her concern that another brand would not give her the same vision and comfort.
Given her high refractive error and reluctance to be refit into another lens, the practitioner wanted to prove he could fit her in a lens that would accommodate her needs; and he wanted to do so in a timely manner before her current supply of lenses ran out. Knowing that SpecialEyes offers extended-range parameters (Image 1), a guaranteed-fit policy, and 4-day delivery, the practitioner called us for assistance.
Upon speaking with one of our consultants, the following information was provided:
K- Readings:
OD: 43.75/48.25
OS: 44.00/48.00
Manifest Refraction:
OD: -4.75 -3.50 x180
OS: -5.25 -4.00 x010
Prior Lens-Wear History:
CooperVision Frequency 55 Toric XR
OD: 8.7 BC/14.4 Diam. -4.50 -3.00 x180 (20/25-)
OS: 8.7 BC/14.4 Diam. -5.00 -3.50 x010 (20/25-)
Using the exam data and our internal fitting protocols, our team designed the following trial lenses:
SpecialEyes 54 Toric
OD: 8.3 BC/14.4 Diam. -4.50 -3.00 x180
OS: 8.3 BC/14.4 Diam. -5.00 -3.50 x010
Note: You may notice that our starting base-curve value is significantly steeper than the patient’s previous brand. Due to the differences in our lens material and modulus, SpecialEyes’ lenses generally require a base curve that is .3mm to .5mm steeper than many in-office lens designs.
Results
With the first set of lenses, the patient was pleasantly surprised. Not only were her new lenses just as comfortable, her visual acuity actually improved to 20/20- OU. After wearing the lenses for a few months, she decided to order the remaining supply of lenses. Upon ordering her supply, the practitioner commented that the patient hasn’t seen this well in a long time and is extremely happy with the end result.
