Here at SpecialEyes, we dedicate ourselves not only to designing precise custom soft toric and sphere contact lenses, but we also focus on crafting custom multifocal and toric multifocal contact lenses for the vast array of discriminative presbyopic patients desiring a successful alternative to spectacles. This blog post series will cover the ins and outs of SpecialEyes’ custom toric multifocal contact lenses, with focus on the 54 Multifocal, a custom aspheric design.

Overview of SpecialEyes’ Custom Multifocal and Toric Multifocal Contact Lenses: We have two different multifocal contact lens designs, the SpecialEyes 54 Multifocal and SpecialEyes 54 Bifocal. The 54 Multifocal is a custom aspheric multifocal contact lens design. This sphere and toric multifocal contact lens slowly transitions from full near or full distance power in the center of the lens to the opposite power in the periphery. The lens is most commonly prescribed near center OU. The uniqueness of this lens is that the center zone size and type (near center or distance center), the rate at which the power progresses within the progressive zonal area, and the point at which full distance power is reached in the periphery of the lens are all fully customizable. The SpecialEyes 54 Bifocal custom contact lens is a concentric annular two-zone design multifocal contact lens. The sphere power is present in either the center zone or outer zone and the full near prescription is placed in the adjacent unoccupied zone. Similar to the 54 Multifocal, the center zone size and type of the 54 Bifocal is completely customizable.

How the Two Designs Differ: The 54 Bifocal differs from the 54 Multifocal in that the design only accounts for two powers, full near and full distance, while the 54 Multifocal toric contact lens incorporates power for intermediate vision via the progressive zonal area. View the images below for an illustration of the custom sphere and toric 54 Multifocal and 54 Bifocal contact lenses. For further learning or to find out how to get started with custom multifocal or toric multifocal contact lenses, you can find the 54 Multifocal Fitting resource at the SpecialEyes Learning Center.

Available Parameters and Customization: Both of the multifocal contact lens designs are are available in any base curve and any diameter which aids in critical on-eye centration of multifocal contact lenses. Customizable add power is also available. SpecialEyes recommends an add power in the custom multifocal or toric multifocal contact lenses that is true to your patient’s  refraction. Exact prescription is also available as well. All of these custom

features coupled with the customization of the zones that house the multifocal optics assist in providing optimal visual acuity at all ranges for our patients with presbyopia who desire to wear contact lenses.
