OptiSync® Technology Is a Slam-Dunk Success for Presbyopic Patient

Read how OptiSync® Technology from SpecialEyes improved this patients acuity and subjective vision with custom soft multifocal contact lenses.

JL, a 54-year-old female with antimetropia and presbyopia, presented with a desire to improve her vision in multifocal contact lenses. Upon ordering a set of the SpecialEyes 54 Multifocal lenses, the practitioner shared that the patient had always struggled with vision and complained of a 3-D effect at near while wearing near-center multifocal contact lenses. The practitioner stated that no matter what she tried, the lenses seemed to decenter slightly in the temporal direction. With this in mind, the consultant suggested trying a set of SpecialEyes 54 Multifocal lenses with OptiSync® Technology. The following information was provided:

Keratometry Readings
OD: 41.5@100/42.02@10
OS: 41.75@150/42.10@60

Refraction
OD: +4.50 -.75 x065
OS: -.50 -.50 x064
OU: +2.25 add

Pupil Size
OD: 4.0mm
OS: 4.0mm

Utilizing this information, the practitioner ordered a set of trial lenses with the following specifications:

OD: 8.5 BC/14.9 Diam. +4.50 sph (+2.25 add) 2.0 N/C, 3.5 I/Z (standard nasal offset)
OS: 8.5 BC/14.8 Diam. -.75 sph (+2.25 add) 2.0 N/C, 3.5 I/Z (standard nasal offset)

Upon initial dispense, the patient stated that her quality of vision was already much better than with any of her prior lenses. The practitioner mentioned that the lenses appeared slightly large and still had minor temporal and superior decentration. She also mentioned that a slight tilt of the head improved near vision in the patient’s right eye and distance vision in her left eye. Based on this information, the practitioner ordered a set of lenses with following specifications:

OD: 8.3 BC/14.7 Diam. +4.50 sph (+2.25 add) 2.0 N/C, 3.5 I/Z (1.3mm nasal offset)
OS: 8.3 BC/14.7 Diam. -.75 sph (+2.25 add) 2.0 N/C, 3.3 I/Z (1.0mm nasal offset)

With the second set of lenses, the practitioner reported the patient had excellent vision (20/20-@D and 20/20@N) and an improvement in overall lens centration. Even better, the patient rated her quality of vision and comfort of the lenses a 10 out of 10.

Lastly, the practitioner took topography over the top of the multifocal contact lenses to assess the alignment of the optics. As you can see in the images below, the near-center portion of the lens is positioned appropriately over the center of the map, which represents the visual axis.
